Yes, you can close windows with cmd-W too. The question was whether you can avoid doing cmd-S before doing so and still not have a dialog come up, and the answer is Yes you can do so for most items. Saving new message windows and many deletions do need confirmations, but not saving contacts, events, tasks or notes after you check the "Don't ask again" checkbox for a particular item type.
