There's nothing different from 2001, it's exactly the same: if you try to close an unsaved new message window, you are always asked if you want to save. If not, it evaporates. Messages aren't like contacts: the purpose of messages is to send them, not save them as draft messages. 99% of the time, if you close an unsaved, unsent message, it's because you're abandoning it, not wanting to save it. So it's good it doesn't save automatically. It's also good it doesn't delete automatically on close. Most items, including messages, contacts, events, etc. _will_ delete without a confirmation if you've chosen the option not to be asked. But some essential things like accounts always ask for confirmation. That makes sense, and it's not as if you have to delete 50 accounts a day or anything like that, is it.
