Dave, Thanks for the response. The "main" server I'm set up with only lists IMAP4REV1 when I do "Get Info" - no UIDPLUS. I don't use any exchange servers at the moment, and I don't use Mac.com. The account with the issue is served by usa.net. I'm also not working offline. Earlier I had tried using LiveSync, but alas my IMAP server doesn't support that, so I turned it off. Now I'm running a schedule that activates to send/receive e-mail every minute. I also have the server options set to "send commands to server simultaneously", whatever that means. :-) Last but not least, I have a second (low volume) IMAP account which *is* set to LiveSync, and is *not* part of my schedule.
