In this era of less than perfect telephone support, you usually get more
accurate advice on the Web. ATT has a faq to set up your email client for
accessing email from outside your home (authentication and some other weird
settings are required). It's on this page:

But if that url doesn't work, you can get to it by going to
http://help.broadband.att.com/ and scrolling down to "How do I configure
Outlook Express for access when travelling.
