Just to be clear, when I use Queue Sync to move data from my laptop computer
to my visor, I am only running the HotSync Manager application. I know the
Palm Desktop application splash screen appears, but it is only HotSync
Manager that is invoked. There is, I know, a Transport Monitor that is
resident on my system too.

I believe that the qualification about Palm Desktop for OS-X refers to the
version of the Palm OS that Handspring does not run. Now, maybe that is
significant and a deal-breaker for others, but it doesn't get in the way for
me. I am not running the Palm Desktop application, of course, I am using MS
Entourage.
