Drop into Terminal and try:

telnet mail.hostname.dom 25

If the hostname you've been given is actually running SMTP you'll get a
response indicating successful login to the SMTP server and possibly server
name and version. Just type "quit" to exit.

If you do not get a response, then you have the wrong hostname.
