But even with that setting unchecked there was still a noticeable lag before the message was marked as read and appeared in the preview pane. You can make that delay longer in the setting, but there was no way of making it instant. Click. It's read. It was more like Click. Beat. It's read. Which was a problem if you were skimming subjects. I would often end up with a bunch of messages that were still marked as unread and I would have to select them all and manually make them read.
