As i recall, that's by design, not poor performance. This way you can
quickly move the arrow keys through a few messages to one you want to read,
without being slowed down by every intermediate message downloading (in the
case of IMAP) and displaying in Preview Pane. I think it's a good solution.
A "beat" is not very long - maybe one second.
