I haven't been following this thread, so apologies in advance if this isn't
relevant.

My small-font spacing went funny under Mac OS X 10.1.4 in both Entourage and
IE. I don't know what triggered it, but I fixed it completely by changing
the preference in the System Preferences General pane to turn off font
smoothing for fonts equal to or smaller than 8 pts., instead of fonts equal
to or smaller than 9 pts. That fix still works in 10.1.5 and under the SR1
upgrade.
