I though I was imagining this. Usually, when I delete a message from a folder (by selecting the message and tapping the delete/backspace key), the message that was below the deleted message becomes selected. But sometimes, just sometimes, the selection jumps to the message above. This inevitably happens when I'm trying to discard 2 or three adjacent messages that are just below the one I intend to read next, and I end up trashing the wrong message and having to go rooting around in the deleted items folder for it.
Being a responsible citizen, I did a little testing to see if I could figure out what was going on before posting this message. Turns out that the 'Sent' column is the culprit. When the column governing message order is set to 'From' or 'Subject', the selection point always moves to the down after a deletion, regardless of whether the column is displayed in forward or reverse order. But with the 'Sent' column selected, it's always the next message in date order that's deleted - so when the date column is in reverse order the selection moves to the next message up. I frequently toggle between date, subject and sender ordering, and this inconsistency in the way Entourage behaves on-screen is a regular source of irritation. Why the difference? And is this another of Entourage's (occasionally over-helpful) default settings that can be changed?
