Here's an update on my problem.

I rebuilt the database. Didn't help. But my crashing problem returned.

Entourage puts up that little modal dialog about synchronizing actions, then
a normal error dialog, and then crashes immediately. It crashed so fast that
I couldn't read the error message, but I managed to snap a snapshot of it:
"Microsoft Entourage got an error: Can't set connection action of incoming
message id 32819 to remove at next connection."

So, thinking there might be something on the server side, I pulled out
Mail.app (how embarrassing!) and deleted all messages on the server (only
about 5) after archiving them in Mail.

Returned to Entourage, it doesn't crash, but I still get the annoying dialog
informing of synchronizing etc. every time I do anything. So...

I created a new IMAP account, exactly the same as the old one except for the
name. This one works fine. The old one continues to put up the annoying
synchronization dialog.

[I should say that the way I'm testing the different accounts is to change
the new one to the default account, and to "Include this account in my 'Send
and Receive All" schedule". Then I used Cmd-K to check mail with it. The old
IMAP account has this option turned off, so it only checks mail when I click
on a mailbox.]

I'm happy at this point to use the new account and eventually delete the old
account, but, geek that I am, it bugs me. I want to know WHY this is
happening to me! (Going offline was my solution, suggested by Paul, to the
problem of Entourage failing its first email check after waking my PowerBook
from sleep because the Airport connection is not yet active.)

TIA for any suggestions.
