The email you just responded to was the notice. It had "Decline | Accept \ Accept Tentatively" at the top of the email, and a colorful Invite icon in the message pane to draw you attention.
If you go now and click Decline in the email, the event will disappear. If you got o General preferences/Calendar/ and uncheck "Accept invitations tentatively" it will never appear in the calendar unless you specifically click it to Accept. (Entourage X). That gives you a lot of control, especially when you consider that most people will want to use this and you don't have to if you don't want to. the worst it will ever do is send you a reminder if you haven't turned your pref off and you haven't declined.
