I've been working on something similar. I had been using the Mac's built-in voices to give me a fairly detailed breakdown of new mail (in homage to CyberDog), but one quickly tires of that sort of malarkey. Now I use a selection of sounds derived from Vernon Elliot's wonderful scores for 'The Clangers' (old UK TV kids show). The most unobtrusive way I know to play sounds from a script in OS X is with the 'PlaySound' background app written by David Blache (aka JollyRoger, formerly of this parish). Find it at http://MicrocosmSoftware.com/products.html It also works in older versions of the OS, and crucially, it will play those old Mac 'system seven sound files' in X.
