Yes, Office does come with proofing tools, so of course you'd find the files
you mention. That doesn't necessarily mean that you don't have a third-party
spell checker installed.

However, you don't have a third-party spell checker installed since I just
figured out which highlighting you've been talking about. You're not using
the in-line spell checker, but are selecting Tools... -> Spelling and the
thin rectangle you've been talking about is the highlighted word in the body
of the message, rather than the selection in the spelling checker window
itself. Thinking originally that you might be spell-checking manually I'd
visited that dialog box, but limited my search for the highlight rectangle
to the dialog box itself. I personally prefer the in-line spell-checking, so
I can't comment with a lot of experience in regards to the spell checking
dialog box, but...

You are correct that the highlighted rectangle is mighty hard to see unless
you have an obnoxiously dark highlight color selected in System Preferences.
But I can't replicate (in my *very* limited testing) the disappearance of
the rectangle.
