Well, I do use IMAP and I can think of a few reasons you might want to use
IMAP for some reason.

A)  You want to clean ship locally.  You've downloaded all of those
messages, and you want to be able to access them at any time (which is why
you use an IMAP server), but you don't necessarily need all of them taking
up database space too.  Clearing the cache deletes the entries, and only
downloads messages when you need them.

B)  You are getting odd listings, double or missing messages, that can be
viewed through a web interface.  Emptying the cache will usually take care
of this corruption.
