I don't use Instant Messaging (yet), so that isn't an issue for me. But for
mail and newsgroups, I can use the spell checker built into MS Office, since
I use Entourage. BBEdit also has a built-in spellchecker.

Excalibur 4.0 is a carbonized general-purpose spell checker that can be used
from any application. It's a bit cumbersome to use. You must copy text
(plain text only) to the clipboard, switch to Excalibur, run the spelling
check, close the window to copy any changes to the clipboard, and then
switch back to the original app and paste. It claims to support word
services, so that apps like Tex-Edit Plus, BBEdit, and MT-Newswatcher, can
use it via the Services menu, but that does not seem to work for me. I've
only put a couple of minutes into trying to make that work...

There are other spellcheckers that work with word services. See
<http://www.wordservices.org/>.
