I was mistaken, actually. Excalibur works via Word services for apps that
support that feature, such as BBEdit, Tex-Edit Plus, and MT-Newswatcher.
With a message or file open in one of those apps, you can then select
"Spell" from the appropriate menu. It <automatically> copies the text to
Excalibur, where you run the spelling check. When that completes, it
<automatically> switches back to the original app and replaces the text with
the corrected version. That gives the benefit of a universal spelling
dictionary. Unfortunately, Microsoft apps can't be included since they don't
seem to have Word Services support.

Another benefit of Excalibur is that it has dictionaries for atomic
elements, biblical terms, biomedical terms, British English, Catalan,
Danish, Dutch (both old and new spellings), French, German, HTML,
Indonesian, Italian, life sciences, Manx Gaelic, medical terms, Norwegian,
Portuguese, Spanish, and Swedish.

Note that Word Services are not the same as "Services" in the application
menu. I confused the two for some time. Services were first supported only
in Cocoa apps. Later, Apple extended it to Carbon apps, but the apps have to
be reprogrammed to make use of them, and the applications that provide the
services also have to be programmed to do so. Entourage will be supporting
Services soon, from what I hear. But I have not heard of any plans to add
Word Services support, which isn't surprising, since that mostly adds
support for 3rd party spelling checkers, and MS has their own.
