I have run into this problem a few times. On some occasions, the issue is
that the message contains a character not in the character set that it
claims to be in according to the message headers. View source will usually,
but not always see the actual contents of the message.

The most common cause of the problem in my case is newsletters that were
edited on Windows systems and contain Windows code page characters, but are
sent with headers claiming that the message is Latin-1 or ASCII.
