In Entourage 2001, what I've been doing is holding down the Control key, then clicking on the message. A menu pops up from which you can choose "Delete message." This is a good quick option if you only have scattered e-mails to delete without opening. However, only use if the message above it in the list is one you don't mind opening, because it will automatically open that one once the deletion is completed. Still, when there's a lot of spam to deal with I like Michael's solution better.
