I was just referring to Dennis' "Buy Entourage and get Word, Excel,
PowerPoint for free" statement regarding Office, not to the "X" part
specifically. I use those other apps so rarely, and bought Office 2001
because I really liked Outlook Express and wanted the new features of
Entourage. So I was just "yoohoo-ing" that marketing comment, because I did
just that. That's all.

I still use E2001 because I don't need OS X, nor do I want it (nor do I want
to buy replacement apps for it.) I am soooo fine with OS 9.1 that I won't
even upgrade to 9.2 -- I've done that twice and both times had to step back
down. Don't get me wrong...I love the aqua interface stuff, and I've used X
on others' machines, including Office X.

I have reached some sort of Zen-ful stasis with my system, for the first
time since 1984 (when Virginia Tech made freshmen buy a Lisa!) and I just
can't ... I can't ... (weeping now) ... I won't do it.

:)

I'm a die-hard Mac guy, which has ended friendships and caused bloodshed.
But, I just can't get behind another hype session.

1. I'm not "bleeding edge" enough to have paid X much attention (except
being constantly annoyed by others about it...which is causing an "X" vs
"classic" split akin to the "Win" vs "Mac" split).

2. I'm not "cutting edge" enough to want it in its update-per-week stage.

3. I'm not "on the edge" enough to make my wife want to kill me for spending
more than I did two years ago to get all new Macs for the house and the
office. My work half a day is Linux/Apache and that is just enough *nix.
The other half of the day is FileMaker development on 9.1, FM5.

Some of you guys are probably in fields that require a "most current" level
of Mac-dom. I'm not. And I consider those who ran (for whatever reasons of
marketing or Freudian syndrome ;) to X as valuable as the first astronauts.
Really.

FWIW (not much)...
I'm the kind of guy who still uses:

a Mac Plus (my recipe server in the kitchen);
an SE30 (my X10 server, with HyperCard);
a PPC7500 (my print server for connecting USB macs to my LaserWriters);
my PowerBook 190c (slightly suped over time) is still my preferred banger
for travel and I've logged an average of 145 travel days per year since 1995
(and my PowerBook got shot by machine gun fire in Sarajevo, and it still
works fine, after the case was replaced by Apple -- free! because of known
defects in the plastic);
my niece and nephew still fire up the LCII and play games when they're over;
and my Apple-staff signed Mac Plus is more secure than the life insurance
policy.

And the box of assorted Apple gadgets keeps finding uses.

See ya. And Happy Thanksgiving to you Allen, and everyone.
