Why not set a schedule to download every 5 minutes? That way the
interruptions might not even be long enough to notice. It's what I do on a
DSL line. I agree, though, that the interruptions while processing incoming
mail can be annoying and needs improvement. I find that most of the delay
comes from my setup with large numbers of mail rules and a number of them
that run scripts or pass off mail to SpamSieve; the latter, especially,
seems to suck CPU cycles. But I find the added spam filtering to be worth
the aggravation. When I have tried eliminating unneeded rules or
consolidating several similar ones, it has helped somewhat. For instance, I
used to have a bunch of rules that filtered mail from particular individuals
into a "Friends" folder and another set that filtered into a "Family"
folder. Instead, I created categories for friends and family, assigned the
category to all those people in my address book, and set up a single rule
that filters on "Sender is in category 'Friends'".
