Just as a follow-up, I had tried all of Allen's suggestions: I had rebuilt
the database, logged out/in, restarted, checked Login Items, etc., and
nothing worked. But then a couple days later, the problem simply went away,
for no obvious reason ;-)

I wish I knew why, but I'm just happy that my database seems to be healthy.
