Thank you for your answer!

I am almost sure that the daemon was not running when I tried to rebuild. I
am aware of the problems with it and therefore I have it always turned off.
Just to be sure, I tried the rebuilds again and I am still having the same
problem.

Thank you for the tip. I have made a backup copy of the database file only.
There seem to be no problems with the other files. However, I will back them
up too in the future.

Good idea. I did not think about that possibility because I had 15.7 GB
free. I tried the following: I moved my Identity folder to my second
harddisk which has 60 GB free with 38 GB beeing the biggest contiguous
space, put an alias to the folder in the identities folder and tried the
rebuilds. I am afraid I am still having exactly the same error message and
problem. Finally, I also tried to do the rebuild on my older G4 with 92 GB
free with exactly the same problems.

Well, I am desperate enough to give that a try. However, my internet
connection will not allow me to send a file of this size. (And I doubt that
stuffing will help much because most of the attachments, which should take
up most of the space, are already compressed.) If you can get me a contact
at Microsoft I could discuss with her/him how to get the file to them.
Perhaps I could bring it to the local Microsoft office in Vienna (Austria, E
urope) and they send it.

Good idea again. I have bought these scripts but did not think of trying
them because I do not get an Entourage window with my identity. However, I
checked again and somewhere at the end of the process Entourage keeps
running without window. I tried to run the scripts but failed. Some of them
require to have something selected and some others quit Entourage
unexpectedly.

Thank you again for your answer! I would really be very thankful if you
helped me to get my mails back!
(Regarding backup: Well, the really sad thing is the following: I backed up
all my data about three days before the disaster on a Windows 2000 Server
with the AppleShare Service. However, it told me it could not copy my mail
file because it was larger than 2 GB. I thought, I would look into that
later. :-( Nevertheless it's a lame excuse because I simply could have
copied it to my second hard disk. I wish I had! I will definitely *not* make
this error again.)

Still it also remains an Entourage problem, which should be fixed to spare
others from the same painful experience. If the database has a 4 GB limit it
should be able to rebuild one with 2.28 GB. I still do not understand why it
grows the database to 4 GB during rebuilding and why it stays for so long at
the same place.

Thank you for your support!

Kind regards
