Go to Tools/Accounts/Mail/that account , and delete it.

Make a NEW mail account with the same settings, but this time make it as an
IMAP account.

When the IMAP server and folders appear in the Folder list (immediately
after clicking OK), click on it, or on its INBOX. You will see immediately
if it is the type of IMAP account where other folders are all folders of the
INBOX, or are at the same level as the INBOX. Create any new folders other
than the standard existing ones there that you may need. (If any standard
ones that "should be" there aren't, click on the server icon. In the big
window pane you may see those folders dimmed. If so, click on them and click
the Subscribe button. Check this before you add any new folders.)

Now go into the local folders where all the messages downloaded. You can
Move them or Copy them to the server. To Move them, select all of them in a
folder (command-A) and click the Move button in the toolbar, select "Move to
folder.." in the dropdown that appears, and select the equivalent IMAP
folder. Repeat for each folder. To Copy them, shift-click two messages no
more than about 500 messages or so apart to select just ~500 messages. The
number selected will appear in bottom LH corner of the main window. If you
have far too many (1000) reduce the number selected. Now drag the selection
to the equivalent IMAP folder to copy. Repeat until done. Repeat for each
folder.

Now that everything's back on the server, I'd strongly recommend that your
friend keep the account as an IMAP account, which is much more versatile. He
can always copy messages to local folders if he wishes, and can even do that
automatically by setting up an IMAP Rule (Tools/Rules/IMAP) to do it for
him. (If he insists on reverting to POP, which would be silly, he can delete
the IMAP account and set it up as POP again, this time selecting "Leave
messages on server".He'll get duplicates of every message he's already
downloaded the last time, of course.)
