I know you've given up on fixing this error, but...

I've experienced similar problems. I've narrowed the culprit of the
connection errors down to my Deleted Items folder. I can only explain it as
sometimes deleting a message (and therefore moving it to my Deleted Items
folder doesn't seem to update Entourage's knowledge of the contents of said
folder. When a scheduled mail check occurs I will receive a connection
error. I will continue to receive an error on every scheduled check until I
click on the Deleted Items folder, thereby causing Entourage to download
message headers. After that, scheduled checks occur without an error.

I'll try to reproduce it and get a tcpflow session...
