The text is black, but in my case, the day box for weekdays is white, and for today it is kind of peach color. The weekends, however, are indeed light gray, so if no category is assigned for a new event and the event is on a weekend, the text is black, the outline oval is a darker gray, and the day window is a lighter gray. However, if the event is on a weekday it's black on gray on white (or if today, black on gray on peach). IMO it's all fine, but if the orig. poster doesn't like the gray oval, then all he has to do is assign a category to change the oval color when he creates a new event (category names and colors can all be adjusted, and/or new categories created, as needed).
