In early days, when software components discovered problems, they put an
error code in a hardware register, because that was the surest method of
signaling;  only one hardware instruction had to be executed, and the code
could often be recovered even from a crashed machine.

Displaying numeric error codes to end users has always been simple
corner-cutting by developers and their managers.
