When sending to AOL: use BASE64 encoding and don't send more than one attachment per message. It's okay to compress. For more information, see <http://members.aol.com/adamkb/aol/mailfaq/#attachments>. Even outside of AOL users, I've always found BASE64 to be more reliable than AppleDouble when sending to Windows.
