I'm sure it will work, but you are being overly cautious. Why don't you just
=COPY= your MUD folder to the desktop (or CDR), do some cleanup, then a
typical rebuild, and let the updater do its thing? If there's a disaster,
restore your backed-up MUD folder and go through the rigmarole you proposed.
