AKA "FireWire Disk Mode." I've never used it to BOOT the Mac from a
PowerBook, so I can't comment on that. I use it to mount the drive I want to
work on as a volume on the desktop of the Mac I have utilities, etc., on.
The "particular command keystroke " is "T" -- hold down the "T" key after
powering on the laptop and instead of booting, it will become a hard disk.
You will know it succeeded by the bouncing FireWire symbol on the laptop's
screen. After using, be sure to unmount the laptop from the other Mac's
desktop before disconnecting it, just as you would any other hard disk.
Power off the laptop by pressing the power key.

I have had good success with CCC but there are definitely quirks, at least
since Panther. I run a lab and use it to maintain the Macs. I have a known
good machine that I clone to a portable hard disk which I then use to boot
the machine I want to work on. I found that (at some point) this stopped
working: the clone operation completed without error, but when rebooted, the
machine would hang at the login screen.
My solution is to FORMAT the drive first, then write the clone to it. I wind
up with a working, booting machine in about half an hour. (Users' files are
stored on the network, so I don't need to worry about losing data. If you
are in doubt, back up the second Mac first, then format and clone.)
