Title: Re: Losing IMAP messages
Thanks for the tips, Paul. Unfortunately, they seem to have no effect.

Command-option L appears to do absolutely nothing. There’s no sign of anything happening, and the message list certainly does not get fixed. How can I tell if it’s doing anything?

A simple rebuild also does not fix the problem; a complex rebuild does, but who has the time to do that every time you check email?

So I’ll stick with dragging the messages around until I get up the nerve to try E2004. Thanks for the encouragement on the upgrade.

I’m new to the list (well, returning after a long absence) and have encountered a problem with an IMAP server. I could not find reference to the problem in the archives, so here goes:

I’m using the Mailblocks (active challenge spam filter) IMAP server. Frequently when I am going through the inbox, the “subject” of a message will change to match the subject of an adjacent message. The original message seems to disappear from Entourage.

You have mild database corruption. Message list ordering is generally fixed by a simple Typical rebuild. Hold down Option key at launch and choose Typical. If that doesn't fix it, repeat but choose Advanced, which will.

Nothing has disappeared. Sometimes all that's needed - especially with a server that isn't a top-quality one - is to do an option-command-L to Repair Message List. (It's not listed in any menu in X, but works. In 2004, it's listed in the contextual, menu for the folder.) But if it's chronic, do a Typical Rebuild.

When I view the Inbox with the browser client, the messages are fine. The work-around I use is to move the mail in the browser client into a different folder, then open that folder in Entourage and move the message back into the inbox. While this works, it’s slow and tedious, and doesn’t give me a lot of confidence that I’m not missing messages.

No, no. Do cmd-opt-L or Rebuild if necessary.

I’m using Entourage X SR1. I haven’t switched to 2004 yet due to the horror stories I’ve read in the Mac boards, but if it fixes this problem, I’ll switch right away.

Horror stories?? What in God's name are you talking about? 2004 is even better and more stable than X. Anyone having problems probably tried to import a corrupt identity from X. Before you import, you should probably to an Advanced Rebuild in X. Then import into 2004. 2004 has an option to turn on verification of the database in the background, so you can be alerted to Rebuild long, long before any corruption becomes serious. It's also got a yet more robust database, rebuilder, and the size is now limitless.
