Just spent about a half hour on the phone with a very nice supervisor with
Bellsouth. We weren't able to make it work, but there is perhaps some hope.
Bellsouth hasn't actually "gone live" with the authentication yet, and this
perhaps is the problem. While I was on the phone with them I quickly set up
an account using Apple Mail (which I had never opened before) and tried to
send using authentication. Mail also failed, but gave me a slightly
different error message. According to Mail, it is the SMTP server that
wasn't supporting the authentication. This would make some sense if they
haven't really turned it on yet. Apparently this is no problem for their
Windows users (or they'd have really heard about it by now!). Maybe Windows
email clients don't care if the client wants to authenticate and the server
doesn't require it, while both Entourage and Mail are more picky.

His advice was to wait until they turn on the authentication next week and
see if it works then.

We'll see. By the way - I never want to have to go into Apple Mail again...
