There are a variety of ways, none perfect. Even email clients that have full
support for receipts are not foolproof; e.g. You'd never know if I read your
message offline, or if I were using Netscape Communicator set to ignore
receipt requests.

You might be interested in services like ReadNotity, which promised
"certified email with delivery receipts, silent tracking, proof-of-opening
