Hi everybody, I thought I'd get back to you and let you know the results of my labours.
With the helpful advice of several sources I managed to recover the received emails, but the customer has lost- Sent eMails (apart from details sent back in replies). Address Book (although he can glean eMail addresses from the recovered files). Calendar Details (BIG problem). Notes. Tasks. He's also lost all the links between these sections and is not a happy bunny. I tried the demo's of EntourAid and Emailchemy, and both seemed promising. Due to the possible 48 hour delay in getting the registration details for EntourAid http://www.thepropellerheads.com/software/entouraid/entouraid.html I initially tried Emailchemy 1.5.8 http://www.weirdkid.com but I was not able to get it to recover more than 78 emails even though the .mbox file created was 1.8Gb. Matt Hovey at Weirdkid was very helpful and even sent me a beta copy of the newest version in the hope it would make the difference, but to no avail. Seems a highly useful program though. So I ordered EntourAid, waited nearly 24 hours for the registration details and the thing came up trumps. Eight hours on a G4 500MHz DP brought up a .mbox file that I was able to just drop on a new E'rage identity and, although about 10% have no subject, this is a great starting point. Just to remind you of the original details- E'rage X 10.1.6 (4Gb limit) Database size 1.8Gb Standard or advanced optimisation failed with 'Unknown Error 4361', probably caused by the power to the computer going off during download. To answer Diane's questions below- 1) Tried to import into E'rage 2004. No luck. 2) Could not export the details as I could not open the database. This was the only method by which I could import into other programs or use import/export scripts as well. Rock/Hardplace > Hardplace/Rock !! 3) To correct Diane slightly, I have several times recovered data by 'importing' E'rage 2001 files into OE 98. If someone has emptied the deleted items folder in 2001 with now required files (but BEFORE optimising), you can get the files back by copying the database files etc OVER the same files in a OE 98 database folder. You then do an optimisation and it will stop, saying the file type is the wrong one. You then IMPORT these files back into E'Rage 2001. Works 99% of the time. 4) The drive had 30Gb of space. 5) 1Gb of RAM, no other programs running. 6) As far as back-ups are concerned, the guy is an unpleasant, arrogant prat who blamed me for the problem, even though it was probably him who switched the eMac off during download, as there is nothing wrong with the cable, socket or computer. I've shown him three times how to do a backup onto DVD, and have 'strongly' suggested that he use his iPod to copy the files as well, but he still cites 'not enough time'. Still, I'll enjoy spending his money as I intend to charge him my hourly rate for the recovery time ;-) Compliments of the season to everyone.
