This sort of problem was unfortunately somewhat common in pre-Entourage 11 databases. Internally we store a table of contents (TOC) for our database. If that TOC becomes corrupted it was very difficult for the rebuild tool to be certain that the contained data was consistant. In Entourage 2004 we took further steps in the way that we store data to be able to rebuild using something other than the TOC. The rebuild tool in 2004 isn't perfect, but it is a lot better than the one in Entourage X.
