Thank you for your reply, but unfortunately I've tried the steps outlined in 
that article already (modified for my situation of course).  In that article 
too it states "Import the root certificate(s) that signed your certificate 
(only necessary if you got your certificate from a non-standard certificate 
authority)" and since I did get my certificate from a standard CA (Verisign) 
this brings me back to the original question of why I'm having this problem in 
the first place?

I'm not even going to pretend I know squat about certificates, but there is an 
excellent guide, " Getting Started with S/MIME on Entourage" that might help 
you with your problem.
