What are your sleep settings in Energy Saver? You have two options there: put the computer to sleep and put the display to sleep. When the display sleeps, a mouse movement will rouse it; but when the computer itself sleeps, it takes tapping a key to wake it up. If you've set your computer to sleep after one hour and the display to sleep after 10 minutes and it only takes you a half hour to shower, then the computer wasn't asleep, even though the display was (and the computer *appeared* to be).
