It doesn’t matter if the message is HTML or not. The fact is that the word “simple” (by itself, without any additional terms) isn’t even in the dictionary! My guess is that causes the search mechanism to jump back in the word list to the place where “simple” would be if it existed. Definitely a bug.

Now control click on the word, and select "Define".
If you get what I get, you get the word "simper" in the resultant window.
On a related note: I'm usually one in the "no more features!!!" group in regards to Office. But the one feature I love in Word is its "Synonyms" contextual menu selection. I really wish that was in Entourage. I find myself opening up a Word doc, just to find synonyms to words I'm using in an Entourage 2004.
