It might be helpful if someone with these spam emails opened Activity Monitor or Terminal and had Top running (or could SSH into the affected Mac) to find out what process is getting stuck. I've been seeing a lot (too much!) of the beach ball lately and it's caused by ATSServer (Apple's font Type Server) going full bore, 180% of a dual G5.
