    Read and understood your explanation, below, and made those changes to
my Advanced Sending Options.

    One last question:  it necessary to make any changes in the Advanced
Receiving Options?  In particular, to the Override default POP port number?

Yes.

Check "Override default SMTP port" and type 587 in the box. If you just
check the box, 25 will be in the port field so you won't have actually
changed anything.

Also check "SMTP server requires authentication" and then select the "Use
same settings as receiving mail server" radio button (almost certainly,
sending uses the same username and password for authentication as
receiving).
