Can I ask why? I'm always intrigued to learn why people put stuff in the
Trash (both in their email client and the Finder) which they don't really
want to throw away. I make a point to ask people before I empty their Trash
after making a user cry once!

I assume the 'advice' given to the OP by MS support was specific to Exchange
accounts. Like Barry, I'd want to call BS on that, frankly - if that really
is the official line, then MS clearly doesn't understand how their customers
use email today.
