I can imagine a scenario in which this new limitation would be really
unfortunate, but let me ask for clarification:
Is the limit of 8 only for items from the address book, and not
also for the

yes, it is 8 entries per group, period.
AFAICT the recent contacts and the local addressbook are one group.
Here's why I ask. Sometimes I want to send an email to somebody
with whom
I've been corresponding recently (say, a week ago), but I can only
remember
the first letter of their name or email address. Yes, this happens
to me!
It's very helpful to hit the one letter and look down the list.
Your solution there is to hit "Command = " on any email whose sender
you value. This makes for a huge addressbook, but keeps their email
out of your Junk folder.... (yeah, I know it isn't perfect).
I guess the old limit was about 20 items?
I am not sure there was a limit before
Why would this be changed?
because now that we can view large corporate lists like GAL's and
such, it is quite possible that Entourage would choke trying to show
such a list.
Also, you might have 10 or who knows how many lists if you are in a
large corporate environment. Having a limit of 8 in that situation
might be handy, and may be necessary.
It's a shame.
It is mostly only a problem for non-Exchange using clients. For
those who had no list based view of the corporate addressbook, this
solution is a god-send, and is greatly appreciated.
* for those of you working in the Mac BU, you have made at least 8
users at one of my clients Giddy. They were so happy. It was really
a great day for me to give them this access you designed.
Here's what I would suggest if it's felt that the list needs to be
shorter.
Take a design cue from Spotlight and make the last item in the list
a "show
all" item that expands the list to full size.
I would be very happy with any solution, including one that set a
preference for number of "hits".
I have at least three clients who were very dissappointed by this
limitation. Fortunately, I backed up their database before moving
them. And of course, these users weren't on Exchange, and so the
majority of other enhancements in SP2 were lost on these users.
Their only problem is that they will not be able to benefit from
future updates without sacrificing their longer-than-8 result list.
