I've seen this one, as well. I tried a variation with the number of folders, reducing the size of the database from 400MB to about 150MB; it seemed to make a difference.
Maybe because I emptied the "Sent" folder as well? (Setting up a rule to put the sent email into the appropriate folder is a bit cumbersome. Is there some other way of handling this?)
