My wife has a G4 iBook running the latest version of Panther.
She came downstairs and told me that she got an alert from M/S (her M/S
Autoupdate is set to check monthly) that the Office 2004 Update was
available. Asked me should she download and install it. I told her to
download but not install it because I had seen that it's best to quit M/S
Office Daemon before installing.
Half hour later I came upstairs to install it. Could not find it on the
desktop. Did a search for <dmg> because that's the format in which these
arrive, no? Negative results.
Searched the HD for <update> and for <office2004> and could not find the
update.
Next step was to launch Entourage...and as it launched a window showing
something like <updating mailboxes> or words close to that ran: exactly as
it had done when I ran this update on my G5 iMac.
Did an <About Entourage>, and found it was version 11.2.1, exactly the
same version I have on my G5 following the update.
So, somehow or other, it would _appear_ that it downloaded and installed
itself. But where's the detritus left over from installation? The trash
bore no evidence of anything associated with this upgrade!
The thought struck me that maybe I had previously installed this update
on her iBook (my memory is not the greatest when I get really busy at work).
If that were the case, however, when M/S Autoupdate ran, it would have seen
that the update had already been installed.
So, went to M/S Office > Updater logs and there it was:
11.2.1 Update Log.txt
It ran from 10:33 to 10:34 this morning and installed the update.
Have I forgotten some key difference between Panther and Tiger? Did
these updates run themselves in Panther?
Thanks,
bob
