I've not seen that error.  Do you have your Sending mail settings for your
Gmail account set up the same way I do?  Here's how I have it set up:

SMTP server: smtp.gmail.com
- Click here for advanced sending options -
    ˆ SMTP service requires secure connection (SSL)
    ˆ Override default SMTP port: 587
    ˆ SMTP server requires authentication
        ˆ Use same settings as incoming mail server

Try those settings and see if it helps.  It seems that it should work, since
I'm running the same versions and haven't seen this message.  I haven't
needed to install a root certificate either.
