For me, this happens all the time, in my case, it is related to when a connection happens, and if email is being sent or received. I went through a lot of testing, various versions, various email servers, etc, with MS, to show them how to repeat this case. For instance, at the end of a batch of incoming emails, there will be a stall, in which the app is non responsive. The more built up emails there are, the longer the stall. eg: Mondays for me are really bad the first time I check email, as a few hundred come into my inbox. I get a 20 second stall or so. Tested on my computer, friends computer, Apple store, new install booted from firewire, and a few other random cases and OS versions. Problem goes back to V.x as well. But, lessen that, to one or two messages, the stall is still there, just barely perceptible. Its there, if you watch CPU usage it will spike a bit, 6 messages, you feel it as a stall in typing.
