Recently switched from Earthlink.net to Verizon.net.

Installed and got the new modem-router working.

Got a Gmail account at Google and set it up, following the excellent
instructions at Google to configure Entourage for POP access.

I can consistently and with no problem _receive_ email in Entourage
which is forwarded from the Gmail account.

My problem is in _sending_ mail from Entourage using my Gmail account as
my From: address.

Sometimes, and sometimes not, when I send an email this will happen:

The progress bar will spin for a full minute then deliver the alert:
Mail could not be sent. The server for account "Gmail RG" returned the
error "5.7.0 Temporary authentication failure i12sm606300wxd." Your
username/password or security settings may be incorrect. Would you like to
try re-entering your password?

I enter my password in the subsequent window which Entourage opens, hit
OK and the mail goes. And everything works fine for awhile. Send an email
immediately, just to test it, and it works. Wait a half hour and try
another test email and again it balks and I have to wait for the minute to
elapse before getting the window requesting my password.

I ran Keychain First Aid to Verify my keychain and saw, in red: item
"pop.gmail.com" has unspecified value for port attribute.

This was repeated three times. Repairing it showed it as fixed.

Does this combo of the authentication error number and the unspecified
value for port attribute in Keychain suggest anything to anyone.

    Many thanks,
    bob
