As Barry says, it isn't possible. However, what you want may be some
kind of "Recent Unread" display, so that older, unread messages are
omitted. You can accomplish that with a Custom View. Use the Advanced
Find in the Edit menu and do a Find operation on all folders for
messages "less than" some number of days--say 3--and whose status is
"Unread". Entourage then builds a list of all messages, in all
folders, that you have received during the last three days that are
still unread.
Now, select "Save as Custom View" from the File menu, and give this
search a name, e.g., "Recent Unread". It will appear at the bottom of
your folder list as one of your Mail Views, and you can click there at
any time to show a refreshed listing. I have such a list, and I have
its View set so that it is arranged and grouped by folder. There may
be 20 uread messages in my Inbox, for instance, but in the custom
view, only the four that came in over the last 3 days are counted, and
the count next to Inbox in the listing is (3), not (20). I then use
"Hide Folders" to hide the folder pane, which still has the total
unread counts showing.
