Thanks for the good suggestions!

It seems that another possibility is being low on disk space. I had free
space on my boot drive that was about equal to the size of my database. I
freed up a good deal of space (went from 6 to 45 GB free) and I no longer
see these alerts. I'll post again to the list if this isn't a "permanent"
solution.

It's disturbing that the Database Utility doesn't distinguish between "not
enough space" and "corrupt database".  This has been a real time-waster!
I've been struggling with this issue for nearly a week! I've been going
through many attempts at restoring database files from backup and recovering
the "corrupt" databases. In the process I've lost a bit of mail from various
servers, when I restored from an old database. I did NOT restore or repair
the most recently "corrupt" database - I simply made more free space on the
drive, and the "corruption" went away.
