I was able to restore my login items on both machines by retrieving ~/Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist from my backup the night before. (Thank goodness for automatic nightly backup!) When installing upgrades on my 3rd Mac this morning, I did not encounter this problem, even with the MS Office 11.3.6 update.
